This is a weird day indeed. Reuters is reporting that today, humanity has reached the 3.3 milestone for mobile phones, a record yet to be passed only by air, water and bread. Even so, some countries lack enough food for their people but that’s not the case for mobile phones.

The 3.3 billion mark doesn’t mean that almost half the world’s population has a mobile phone, but the fact that the industry has grown big. Same people can have one, two or at most three mobile phones with them. Usually, having two mobiles registered with different operators is the most common case, which, with an aproximation means that 3.3/2 = 1.65 billion people have a mobile phone. A big number, indeed.

"The mobile industry has constantly outperformed even the most optimistic forecasts for subscriber growth," Mark Newman, head of research at Informa said in a statement. "For children growing up today the issue is not whether they will get a mobile phone, it’s a question of when," Newman said.

"The economic difference between the more mature markets and those in developing countries is highlighted by the vast differences in operators’ revenues per user," Informa said. In any case, future milestones will get harder to reach, for sure …
