Quake 4 is the fourth title in the series of Quake FPS computer games. It was developed by Raven Software and distributed by Activision. Raven Software has collaborated with id Software, the creators and usual developers of Quake games in the past. This game, id Software supervised the development of the game as well as providing the Doom 3 engine upon which the game was built.

The story of the series continues from Quake II, because Quake III Arena has an unrelated plot to the former, focusing on on-line multi-player and a very limited single player mode that is essentially the multi-player played against computer controlled bots. Quake 4, like its immediate prequel Quake II, is not related to the first Quake in any respect other than the name and the logo.

What’s new?

The game-play has remained basically the same as in Quake III or Quake II. The player takes up the gun and kills until he is fed up with it. Still, unlike Quake III, this one reverts to the story of Quake II, when you crash land on the alien’s homeworld with the scope of revenging what they did back on Earth.

The game features four levels of difficulty, each more challenging than the previous. These are private, with a hint next to it, "Try not to shoot yourself in the foot." The next one, corporal means that "You can hit a moving target… usually." The lieutenant skill refers to a motto so dear to me, "Shoot first, ask questions later." The last one of them, and surely the hardest is general, a real "unstoppable death machine".

Not only do these skills affect the movement speed of enemies, but also their health, accuracy and intelligence. This means that if an enemy, in let’s say private mode, would just roll closer to you, in lieutenant or general, he would certainly roll behind a wall and only shoot if you are in his line of sight, or even throw grenades at your feet.

As any FPS, the primary controls are the all known "wasd" keys for movement, left click for shooting, space for jumping and others, but these are the most important in a fight, and the most used.

The game’s game-play leaves the "replay" door open. This is mainly because the game is straight forward, the plot does not split in more ways. This and the fact that you just have to kill everything that is not human in one way or another gives the player the feeling that he has not been through the same places twice.

In addition, this game brings new elements into the Quake world. You are able to drive tanks. Yes, you heard me, cold machines of death armed with a main gun and a machine gun to easily take care of any biological nuisance on the battlefield.

Besides the tank, later in the story, you will be able to take command of a walker. Armed with homing rockets that are in packages of six and with a machine gun, you will have fun killing Stroggs and destroying their ships. Another bonus while in tank or walker mode is that if you have patience, your armor and shields will regenerate quite fast.
